Private prison companies get paid to lock people up. When detention is a business, the companies running it profit from every contract, every facility, and every bed filled. Reporting has raised alarms about private firms selling facilities to the government and then being hired to run them. That arrangement hands corporations a financial stake in immigration detention and gives states less say over what happens inside their borders. Taxpayers foot the bill, and the people held in these facilities bear the cost. Decisions about who is detained and for how long should never be shaped by a company's bottom line. Congress has the power to write the rules for how detention is contracted, who can profit from it, and how the public can see where the money goes. Right now, those rules leave too much room for greed and too little room for oversight. Ban private companies from profiting off immigration detention.
