When a school discriminates against a student because of race, sex, or disability, the Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights is where families go for help. It investigates complaints and makes schools fix what they got wrong. Now the administration is using interagency agreements to shift that enforcement out of the department and gut its regional offices. Scattering this work weakens expertise, stalls cases, and leaves vulnerable students without a reliable place to turn. A child with a disability denied the services they need should not sit in a backlog. A student facing harassment should not learn that no one is left to answer the call. Lawmakers hold the power of the purse and the power to write the law. Block the transfer of civil rights enforcement out of the Department of Education, and restore full funding and staffing to the Office for Civil Rights.
