A giant triumphal arch is planned for Memorial Circle, steps from Arlington National Cemetery, where American veterans rest. Critics say it would loom over their graves. Arlington is the most sacred ground in the country. Whatever rises beside it should honor the people who served, not flatter a sitting president. Monuments in the nation's capital are supposed to be authorized by Congress, in public, with a vote. This one is advancing without that vote while lawmakers stay silent. Veterans' families deserve to know that no one can reshape the landscape around their loved ones' graves on a whim. Voters deserve to see where every member of Congress stands. A decision this big belongs on the record, not buried in a planning process nobody elected. Require a congressional vote before any monument is built near Arlington National Cemetery, and block this arch until Congress approves it.
