Elections belong to the states and the voters, not to whoever controls the Justice Department. Petitioners say the department is subpoenaing election workers and steering federal prosecutors toward criminal investigations of state officials, right as people are casting ballots. A federal judge called it a broad, ongoing pattern of attempted election interference. Election workers are neighbors doing a job. They count the ballots and certify the results. They should never have to fear that federal law enforcement will be turned on them for doing it honestly. When the government can threaten the people who run elections, it puts every citizen's vote at risk. This should not depend on who holds power. Write it into law. Prohibit federal law enforcement from using subpoenas, investigations, or prosecutions to intimidate election workers and coerce states into changing how they run elections.
