Elections belong to voters, not to whoever holds the White House. Yet the federal government is accused of using lawsuits, threats of criminal prosecution against local election officials, and agents questioning voters at their doors to shape which ballots are counted and whether results are certified. Tactics like these are built to scare people away from voting and to hand officials a pretext to dispute outcomes they dislike. Local election workers run our elections. They should never have to fear federal prosecution for counting lawful ballots. Voters should never find a federal agent on the porch asking about their immigration status or voting history. Courts have pushed back, but courts should not be the only barrier. Congress must draw a bright line. Pass a federal law that bars the executive branch from intimidating voters, threatening election officials, or blocking the counting and certification of lawful results.
