Elections belong to the voters and the states that run them. Certifying the results is the job of state election officials, not the Justice Department. Yet top federal officials have refused to rule out trying to stop a state from certifying its own results. They have also left open the possibility of federal agents showing up at polling places. That is a threat to every ballot cast. If Washington can block a certification it dislikes, your vote counts only when the people in power approve of the outcome. Voters should not have to wonder whether showing up means facing federal agents. Election workers should not have to wonder whether their honest work will be overridden from afar. Statements of concern are not protection. Only law is. Write into federal law that no federal agency can block or override a state's certification of its election results, and bar federal agents from interfering at polling places.
