Drivers who switch to electric are doing something most of us say we want: cutting pollution and gas use. Now Congress is looking for ways to pay for highways, and some proposals would single out electric vehicle owners for extra fees. That is not a fair funding fix. It is a penalty on cleaner transportation. Electric vehicle owners already pay into the system through the ordinary costs of owning and registering a car, and in many states through flat annual electric vehicle fees on top of that. Piling on new charges that no other driver faces punishes people for a choice that helps everyone breathe easier. Road funding should be shared fairly, not used to tax a cleaner way to drive. Any plan that pays for roads, bridges, and transit can do it without targeting drivers who went electric. Vote no on any measure that imposes discriminatory fees on electric vehicle owners.
