Social Security and Medicare are not handouts. Every retiree drawing them paid in out of every paycheck across a whole working life, on the promise that the benefit would be there at the end. Now that promise keeps getting treated as a line item to trim: raise the retirement age, cut the cost-of-living adjustment, shift Medicare costs onto seniors, and tell people who already put in their forty years to go back to work. Each of those lands on the people least able to absorb it: people whose bodies are worn out from physical work, who live on a fixed income, and who planned their lives around a benefit they bought and paid for. Oppose any cut to earned Social Security and Medicare benefits, including a higher retirement age or a smaller cost-of-living adjustment.
